There has been
a nursery in the walled garden of Ford Castle for over 20 years.
Formerly called Northumbria Nurseries, the business now trades as
Ford Nursery, and specialises in growing a tremendous range of hardy
ornamental plants.
The two-acre
site is devoted to plants - there are over 1500 in our current lists,
with many new and interesting varieties in the pipeline. We propagate
most of the plants ourselves, although stock plants for the new
introductions do come from a handful of specialist growers. From
that point onwards, we have complete control over the growing process,
and the end result is a hardy plant that is never mollycoddled or
forced in any way whatsoever.
This means that
the plants you buy will be real doers - and we have twenty years'
worth of customers from all over Britain who come back to us year
after year for more.
We are increasing
our range all the time, and many of the plants can be seen growing
at the nursery. A couple of years ago, we doubled up our demonstration
area with a fabulous new herbaceous border.
Lately we've added a
bamboo 'grove', a raised alpine bed and some interesting bog plantings.
Nursery owner and in
charge of production is Roy Harmeston who has an encyclopaedic knowledge
of the plants, and how to grow them.
Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are on hand to answer questions, and will help you to find exactly what you are looking for.
